Jan was incredibly kind and professional, she made us feel as if we were talking to a family friend that had been part of our lives for years.
Saying goodbye to my Aunt felt easier with Jan being there to ease the pain with her compassion, gentle approach and wonderful way with words.

Jan was wonderful throughout the entire process. She was caring, attentive, compassionate, and incredibly helpful, and it was lovely to discover that we shared so many local connections, hobbies and interests.

She made what could have been an overwhelming experience feel straightforward and easy to navigate. During our conversations, she gently drew out the important memories and details about my father, allowing her to create a service that truly reflected who he was. She presented him in a way that I know he would have been proud of.

Rather than focusing on mourning his death, Jan created a funeral that genuinely celebrated his life, which was exactly what our family wanted. Her warmth, kindness, and friendly manner during the service put everyone at ease and made it a fitting and memorable tribute.

I feel so grateful to have had Jan as the celebrant for my father-in-law’s funeral. From the very first meeting, she was incredibly easy to deal with during what was a difficult time; punctual, calm, and practical.

I thought she struck an excellent balance between listening to what the family wanted whilst gently guiding us on what would work best. We never felt overruled, but we did feel supported—she had a real sense of what would resonate with people and what might not land as intended.

Our family is quite reserved and not always great at expressing things openly, but she drew out important details about my father-in-law and his role in the family. He was Texan but quite private, and she delivered the parts about his background exactly as intended—warm and lightly humorous, without ever feeling awkward or overdone. The service felt thoughtful and personal as a result.

Her sensitivity to the situation has stayed with me. Small things didn’t go unnoticed. I was particularly touched by her request for a cup of hot water which demonstrated her respect for my need to provide hospitality even though she didn't want tea or coffee.

On the day, her voice and manner were beautiful—calm, warm and very fitting for the occasion. She also handled a last-minute addition to the service calmly and proactively, distracting from an awkward moment and ending on a positive note.

I would wholeheartedly recommend Jan Alden Smith to anyone seeking a caring and professional celebrant. Jan’s compassion and skill brought real comfort at one of life’s toughest moments. The ceremony was exactly what we had hoped for — warm, inclusive, and a true reflection of my Father-in-Law’s character. Many guests commented on how beautifully Jan spoke. What I observed the most was the way Jan looked after those members of our family who bravely stood up to give a eulogy. Jan was so comforting to them all and I know she helped them with their eulogy’s enormously. Jan organized the funeral for my late father and I can't recommend her highly enough. She was incredibly kind and caring, very gentle and so understanding. As well as spending a lot of time talking with me she also came around to speak to my mum in order to get a good idea of my father from my mums perspective, and to understand us as a family also.
